A Hopeful Medic

thoughts of a first-year UK medical student

A Whole Year of Blogging!

Wowee – it has been a year since I started this blog last year (on a side note it was actually my sister’s birthday to be precise – she’s turning 18 this year, how exciting!) – time really goes by quickly, and 65 posts, 74 comments and 2730 views later; here we are.

I started this blog as a ‘hopeful medic’ (hence the name of my blog, though long-winded) in year 13 aspiring to study Medicine at university. Now I am so lucky to look back on that wish having actually achieved it. I love my course (most of the time) and fingers crossed I get through the rest of the year alright.

So this time last year, I was mainly trying to document my experiences as student trying to get into medical school…that’s kind of just developed into a ‘journal’ of my university experience now studying as a first-year. As much as I write this blog for myself, I would also like to keep it relevant and helpful for my readers too. I have been so grateful that people actually read and bother commenting on what I write about sometimes and the variety of the ‘stats’ page never ceases to amaze me.

So I would like to appeal to any of you readers out there for any ideas or comments about the blog thus far or for future suggestions about what I could post about (please see the poll at the end of the post). At the moment it tends to be whatever has caught my mind that particular week or anything I have found particularly interesting from my course but I am welcome to any feedback. That’s it for this short post, and thank you to those of you who continue reading my blog.

  2. I agree from the poll that the main things I’d like to read about is your university lifestyle and clinical placements (which you do very well btw). However, as a medical applicant myself, science news would also be helpful providing its not a dull read, and keeping us updated weekly might make you feel like blogging is a chore rather than a choice – so all in all, update with whatever/whenever you feel you necessary! You’re doing great as it is :D

    • Thank you very much for commenting @mhs and giving feedback – Yes I will try to do some more science news updates (so far I’ve only done one post to date) but as you say, sometimes it can be more of a dull read and it’s just picking through it to get to the important bits. Personally I find it easier to post ‘experiences’ likes university lifestyle/clinical placements because they don’t need to be backed up and those posts are sort of like a diary. (I’m glad you enjoy reading them though!)

At times it can be difficult to keep blogging regularly but RE:science news, I might aim for once a fortnight to start with and see if I can keep that up, as hopefully it will be relevant for medical interviews etc. that you may have.

Feel free to comment/email any more suggestions you have as it really helps to help me tailor what I write – Good Luck with the application!

      • Yes I hear you – definitely the best medical blogs I read (and believe me, I read a lot of them!) are all about medicine at university and what it’s like. Particularly things like, what you cover in lectures, what your exams are on, what results you get, how you interpret the results, what they mean, what a pain the lecturers can be, how fun your MedSoc nights are, how crap some nights turn out, the good societies to join etc.

Yes, the science news now and then sounds good!

As long as you keep the whole thing really really honest, (so much so it hurts!) it’s going to be awesome.

But again, i’d like to reiterate what a joy it’s been reading this all so far.

      • No problem will definitely take on board your suggestions. I remember reading ‘medic’ blogs last year before I got in and I would find probably the most mundane things really interesting because it was just so insightful so see what the course and university lifestyle was. Thanks so much for the lovely comment – you made my day (and sorry for the lack of recent posting, will do one soon!) :)
